Two Eurasians sat on parked motor scooters at
the river bank in Phnom Peng. They were watching the river festival and
eating fresh pineapple slices from a banana leaf sold by street vendors.
The young man wore leather sandals, light black trousers and a black,
white and blue Madras short sleeved shirt. He said, “Take this napkin
comrade sister. Mother sent us assignments via the embassy here in Phnom
Peng. We are to split up; I must follow my half-brother Yuli to Italy
while you stay in Cambodia and find a trail on Wasilly and Captain
Pugachev. Keep me updated on the surveillance team watching Madam
Pierre. Promise me you will rely on our local talent. We are dealing
with seasoned dangerous agents. You know I worry about you.”
She was as tall as her brother and wore patent leather slippers, baggy
black silk pants and a white silk blouse. She had a green jade ‘O’
hanging around her neck suspended by a red cord. She was gorgeous.
“I will be fine, brother. Neither one of us is a novice. I fit in this
environment as just another Asian. It is you I am worried about. How
will you get close to Yuli? You will stand out in Italy.”
“No problem Zulia, the Communist Party is well and active in Italy. We
also have solid connections to Calabrese organized crime factions. They
will do anything for money.”
“Do you intend to use the Mafia to recoup the party’s funds?”
“Yes. They will kidnap Yuli. This will draw Wasilly back like a
magnet. I will further use them to get all the information mother has
requested. I will be there when they interrogate Yuli and Wasilly after
they have softened them up.”
“Excellent plan, brother.”
