| "My red star, do you feel comfortable
engaging me in conversation? I feel relaxed when we talk."
"Yes, Lin Tou. I am at ease when we are together. I have to
admit, I enjoy your company," was my candid reply as she took a
sip.
"Ooh, the tea is still a little hot. While we allow it to cool
off, perhaps I can tell you a very nice ancient story."
"Please do. I would like that very much."
"This chain of events occurred with the first people of the
earth. They left paradise and started their own clans. Large families
would stay together and then move, always looking for an ideal place to
make their own paradise. As it happened, a young man and a young girl
were comfortable with each other. They had a desire to exchange sweet
thoughts but could not with others all around them. The thoughts they
wanted to share were for each other and no one else.
One day the young girl had an idea. She asked the boy to take her
for a walk deep in the forest. There, away from the clan, they could
talk. He took her far from the village and they shared sweet things.
However, when they returned to the village everyone made fun of them.
The wind had betrayed them and carried their words back to the people
in the camp.
Now the boy had an idea. He took the girl away from the village
again into a cave he had discovered. There in privacy, the young
couple, opened their hearts to each other. When they returned to the
village, everyone began to snicker. The cave betrayed them to the
wind, for the echo from the cave left its mouth and was carried to the
camp.
Now the girl had an idea. She took the boy down to the river to get
water with her. She wondered if the sound of running water wound
muffle their conversation. There, with the rippling of the water in
the background, she got very close to the boy and told him sweet
things. When they returned to the village everyone was confused and
curious. Is seemed that since they were very close, the wind could
only catch a phrase or a word over the gurgle of the river. They asked
them many questions about the broken conversation the wind brought to
them.
Drawing on the girl’s idea, the boy wondered if they spoke very,
very close, the wind would not be able to squeeze between them and
steal their words. He took her to get firewood with him. They
collected some wood in silence then the boy took her hand and drew her
to him. This was the closest they ever were. They both were about to
speak when their lips touched. That was how the first kiss was
discovered and why lovers do not always have to talk."
She finished her story, took a sip of tea and slid her hand across
the table in my direction. I reached out and gently stroked the back
of her hand. She turned her hand over and we clasped hands. I pulled
her toward me since the table was narrow. We both met half way until
our lips touched. We kissed again and again.
"Who is in my kitchen?" shouted a voice from the hallway.
"I can see a light on."
"It is Lin and Wasilly," answered Lin Tou.
